What is the Google PageRank ?

The PageRank is translated by « Popularity Index ». It is an algorithm of the famous Google search engine. It measures the popularity and relevance of a web page.

Search engines take into account the PageRank of indexed pages to set the display order of results following a request initiated by a user.

Today, all the important search engines (Google, Bing/MSN, Yahoo !) use the PageRank (also known as PR or Popularity Index).

Initially, the PageRank was calculated based on a quantitative criteria : the greater the number of links pointing to a page, the higher its popularity index. One link pointing to you = one vote. The sum of the votes would define your PageRank.

Today things are different. The algorithms are more sophisticated, they take into account more factors such as the quality or relevance of the links that point to a website.

Therefore, it is no longer the number of links that is important but rather their quality and their type. To be well ranked on search engines such as Google, Yahoo! or Bing/MSN, you should have links with a PageRank superior or equal to the popularity index of your page.

To place yourself above your competitors, it is not necessary to have more links than them, it is enough to have better links.

What are the factors included in the calculation of the PageRank?

It is important to know the factors contributing to the evaluation of your PageRank in order to define a strategy aiming to improve the search engine optimization of your pages and of therefore of your entire website.

  • The first aspects taken into account are first of all the quality and then the quantity of the links. So, a vote from a page with a high PageRank will be worth more than the vote of a page with an average PageRank. It is better to have a few quality links pointing to your page than having many links coming from personal page for instance. Also, if you have a large number of links coming from pages with great value, it's even better. In this case you combine the quantity and the quality criteria.
  • The number and nature of links on the pages pointing to you is equally important. The more a page that points to you will offer diverse and varied links, the lesser importance will have its vote .
  • The PageRank is calculated considering a specific page, not a website as a whole. Your home page (index) will most frequently have the most important popularity index among all the other website pages. In fact, the articles on the web generally point to the home pages.
  • Only the links pointing to you (inbound links or backlinks) are taken into account. The links coming from your pages and pointing to another website (outbound links) are currently not included in the calculation of the PageRank.

    The page A which has a PageRank 8 will greately contribute to the PR of the page B. What is more, as there is only one outgoing link from page A to page B, page B will benefit 100% from the vote coming from page A

    In this case, page B also benefits 100% of the vote coming from page A, but as the latter has lower PR (2), this link will not have a great influence over the PR of the page B.

    In this example, the PR of the page A is very strong but it points to 2 pages. In this case, it will only influence 50% of the B and C pages' PR. The impact of the vote coming from page A therefore may be weaker than in the first example.

The link exchange strategy

When you ask for link exchanges, target sites with high popularity rather than little-known websites. If you think a website is interesting, check the PageRank of its homepage. Also check out the number of links pointing towards that website by running the following query : « link:www.yoursite.com » on Google. On Yahoo ! the query to be executed is « linkdomain:www.yoursite.com » If you are interested in more websites, do the same thing for each of them and contact those who seem to have the largest number of inbound links (or backlinks). Although we have seen that the quantitative aspect was not the most important criterion, it still gives a good idea of the potential of the website.

Furthermore, you should only make link exchanges with websites dealing with topics that are closest to yours. This way, you will strengthen your most important keywords' relevance. By linking to websites dealing with the same topics or themes as yours, your also confirm the theme of your website.

The text contained in the external links (anchor text) that link to your website is very important for your position in the search engines' results. The anchor in a link is the texte placed between the HTML tags <a> et </a> the expression or the keyword contained in the anchor is the text that you click on to go to a new page. Search engines also take into account the keywords contained in these anchors because they provide additional information on the content of the landing page.

Register your site in the most important directories including them in the most suitable categories. Your presence in Yahoo!, Open Directory or any other important directory will contribute to the improvement of your PageRank.
